Prayer Requests for Japan (as of March 16, 2011)

1 Nuclear situation to come under control
- For the meltdown NOT to happen, so that it doesn’t blow up.
- Protection and wisdom for the 50 brave workers who have stayed behind to try to fix the reactors
- For the radiation levels to go down and stay down

2 No more earthquakes:
- There have been 464 aftershocks (as of March 15). One expert explained that there are three main tectonic plates under Japan. Two of them have moved causing the earthquakes and there is a good chance for the third plate to move causing more earthquakes and damage.—PRAY THAT THIS WILL NOT HAPPEN!

3 Pray for peace and pray against fear/trauma:
- Many people are traumatized and are operating under fear everywhere, even in cities that are not directly affected by the earthquake, tsunami and the nuclear problems.
- For those who are stranded and stuck to be rescued quickly

4 Pray for the believers and churches across Japan
- Pray that believers everywhere will trust in the Lord and stand strong, especially during these hard times.
- That they will be witnesses and have opportunities to share the love of Jesus.
- Pray for salvation, for open heart towards the Gospel and people to be open and hungry for Jesus

5 Leaders of Japan
- Pray for wisdom and discernment as they coordinate the country’s efforts with relief work and nuclear containment.
- For accurate and useful information to be communicated to everyone.

6 Relief workers
- Pray for more workers. Pray for their strength and safety. Some are working in areas where there are still aftershocks and nuclear danger. Pray for their mental and emotional health. One report said many people (relief workers) broke down in tears out of trauma.

7 Resources
- Pray for food, water, blankets, gasoline, and other supplies to reach those in need. Majority of the evacuees do not have access to basic necessities. Even in Tokyo many stores and gasoline stands are out of a lot of the basic supplies.
- Electricity. Greater Tokyo has begun energy rationing via rolling blackouts. This has greatly affected the city.

FGA Orphanage, Kg Speu, PP

There is an orphanage set up by Full Gospel Assembly of KL in Pnomh Penh and the fact that you see less homeless kids running around begging in PP is testament to its success.

The grounds used to be a motor repair workshop/garage used by the army but since abandoned and leased to FGA.

The original motor shed/garage has been maintained and now used to store vehicles, bicycles and storeroom of sorts.

One of the classrooms where English is taught. The guy in blue is Sunny, the caretaker of this place. He’s a Malaysian and runs the place with his wife.

The children take turns to man the kitchen and other duties.

The home is quite self sufficient. You can see vegetables are planted on a plot of land at the back. The children are each given a small plot of land and they are allowed to plant vege there to be sold back to the orphanage or in the market place. They are allowed to keep the money as allowance or buy more seeds. In this way, they are also taught the simple basic economic law of supply and demand cos if they plant certain vege that are in high supply, it would not fetch good value.

Sunny even bought a couple of cows to graze the land and thus saving on a lawnmover and the cow manure can be used to fertilise the vege farm.

There was a crack in the water tank but as you can see, due to the hard water , calcification took place and sealed up the crack. The hard water also explained why we saw many locals having “coloured” hair.

Devotion:
Two years ago, I lost 25 pounds and for the first time in my life, I've kept it off.
However, my real celebration isn't over the smaller clothing size and reduced numbers on the scale. My real celebration is over the spiritual insights I gained while losing the weight and maintaining my healthy progress.
For me, this has been a spiritual journey—a significant spiritual journey with great physical benefits. I had been overweight physically and underweight spiritually and finally tying those two things together was life-changing.
One of the richest lessons has been realizing the amount of mental and spiritual energy I wasted for years just wishing things would change. All the while, I was beating myself up for not having the discipline for making those changes.
If you have an issue with weight and food, you know what I mean. But no matter what issue you are currently dealing with, can I offer a bit of encouragement? Jesus wants to help you with that issue. He really does. But you've got to stop beating yourself up about it and determine to follow His lead.
Have you ever looked at other people and thought to yourself, "How does everyone else have it all together? And why is it I seem to have so many issues?"

We like to identify our shortcomings, form them into a club, and beat the tar out of ourselves mentally. Over and over and over again. We label ourselves and soon lose our real identity to the beaten and bruised fragility we call "me."

We compare, we assume, we assess, we measure and most times walk away shaking our head at how woefully short our "me" falls compared to everyone else. How dangerous it is to hold up the intimate knowledge of our imperfections against the outside packaging of others.

If there is one thing that living 40-plus years has taught me it's this... all God's girls have issues. Every single one of us.

Now, hear me out.

Having issues isn't the absence of victory in our lives. It's simply a call to action reminding us victory is right around the corner.
I can make the choice to identify my shortcomings and instead of using them against myself, hand them over to Jesus and let Him chisel my rough places. The grace-filled way Jesus chisels is so vastly different than the way I mentally beat myself up. My mental scripts can so often be full of exaggerated lies that defeat. His chiseling is full of truth that sets me free.

Oh what a difference.

Jesus doesn't compare.

Jesus doesn't condemn.

Jesus doesn't exaggerate.

He simply says, "Hey, I love you. I love you just how you are. But, I love you too much to leave you stuck in this. So, let's work on it together. You can do this."

There is something so powerful in really believing that with Jesus' help you can do this. Say it with me, "I can." In my new book, Made to Crave, I wrote, "I can is a powerful little twist for a girl feeling deprived and defeated."

I can helps me walk into the dinner party and find the conversation more appealing than the food table. I can helps me stay on the perimeter of the grocery store where the fresher, healthier selections abound and smile that I know this. I can helps me reach for my water bottle and find satisfaction in its refreshment.

I can helps me look at the drive-thru menu and order a fruit tray without even giving a thought to the fried foods I used to snack on. I can reminds me to look up a restaurant's nutritional information on the internet before going out, insuring wiser choices. I can reminds me no food will ever taste as sweet as victory does.

I'll say it again, having issues isn't the absence of victory in our lives. It's simply a call to action reminding us victory is right around the corner. Today is a great day to start believing you were made to walk in victory and to say to Jesus, "Yes, with Your truth as my guide, I can."

Dear Lord, help me to see myself the way You see me. Please help me to remove the lies that defeat me more often than I want to acknowledge. You have set me free. Help me to live like I truly believe that. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

New Year

Time and Again

Devotion:
We are creatures of habit, aren't we? Whether those habits are beneficial to us - or even if we regret them time and again - we tend to repeat the same behaviors day after day:

· We light another cigarette, even though we just said yesterday we want to quit.

· We eat the brownies in our pantry, even though we're aiming to lose weight in the New Year.

· We camp in front of the TV for hours most evenings, even though we want to be the kind of person that goes for walks and reads novels instead.

· We leave things laying where we last used them, even though we long for uncluttered surroundings.

· We buy a new Bible, figuring that will propel us to get in the Word more. Two weeks later it sits on the shelf.

We want to be the person God calls us to be, so we use January to make New Year's resolutions about how we're going to change this year. We give voice to that longing in our hearts to be different - to be somehow better. And we decide to give a heart-felt go at changing.

And there's nothing wrong with that. On the contrary, it's a move in the right direction. However, the Bible advises us to check our plans against the Lord's, and then ground our commitments in His truth and power in order to succeed.

Remember this, for the Holy Spirit to facilitate God's work and purposes in us, He must first (re)define our definition of reality, and our priorities.

For example, say that you wish to spend time in God's Word in 2011. Great - that's God's will for you as well. For that to happen, your habits must change. And for that to happen, your perception of reality must be redefined.

I'm guessing you currently believe, and your current actions demonstrate, that you don't have time to really pursue God like you want to. You're convinced you're too busy to join a Bible study, or have a regular quiet time of prayer and Bible reading, without quitting your job or neglecting your family in the process. But is that true?

"God has given everyone enough time to seek Him. It is there," says Francis Frangipane. He continues, "Those who would find God, find time." "For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven" (Ecclesiastes 3:1, ESV).

When a favorite TV show comes on, we find time to watch. When a favorite store announces a big sale, we find time to go. When a friend wants to meet for coffee, we make time to meet her. We find or "make" time all the time! So rest assured that if you live a healthy, God-honoring life, there is plenty of time there to grow in your knowledge of, and connection with your Creator.

It is true that in our busy lives we cannot do everything. But we can choose which things absolutely will get done. We can choose what to do first. And that's precisely what the Bible tells us to do. Jesus calls His followers to seek first God's kingdom and His righteousness, and then He promises we will have all we need (Matthew 6:33).

It is also true that our willpower is limited. Our dedication wanes. Our intentions are good but our follow-through is shaky. We don't have what it takes to revolutionize our entire lives. But God does — and He lives in us. "By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know him, the one who called us to himself by means of his marvelous glory and excellence" (2 Peter 1:3, NLT).

You absolutely have time to spend 10 or 20 minutes a day getting to know God and His promises for you in His Word. You also have the extra eight seconds it typically takes to put an item back in its place. Watch one less TV show a night and you'll have created time to read three or more books every month, and take a brisk walk after dinner. Seek God first - time after time - and you'll even have the power you need to put down the brownies or cigarettes.

We are creatures of habit - let's make it our habit in 2011 to seek God first each day and commit our plans to Him. I think we will marvel at the results, time and again.

Dear Lord, today I seek Your face, wisdom and Your will. I give my plans to You and I ask that I may operate in Your power. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Prey Kedai Village, Kg Speu, PP

We spent about 2days in this village which is a predominantly padi farming village.

This is the church led by Cambodian Pastor Moses. It is just a hut structure built on slightly elevated ground.

Local haircut – USD0.50

This little girl is the best dressed in the village and rightly so as her father is the moneylender in the village and one of its wealthiest!

Some of the kids who came for the English class and Children’s Church programme.

Cows are normally reared in the compound and supplies milk for the family. In these villages, your wealth can also be defined by the number of cows you have!!

Our Malaysian team decided to wear red on this day hence the majority of red tees worn.

The babies were so cute and the villagers were friendly and open to ministering and prayers .

November is the harvesting season here

Thrashing of the padi for the grains.

Some of us got involved in the thrashing as well!! City folk always get excited by the simple things in a village.

This mother and child were also praying with us!

UNICEF donated the building of this well to the Prey Kedai Village

Mushroom farming has just been started in the village successfully.

During visitations, we came across a grave that was in front of one of the houses. Pastor Moses explained it was of the grandmother of the inhabitant who lived there.

Cambodian villagers do love to rear dogs as they provide protection at night against intruders.

Most of the houses we visited had a bed platform made of cane and wood and this is normally where they would sleep and eat as well. Note the mosquito nets were also provided by UNICEF.

Notice the drip bottle hanging from the ceiling..well if you cant afford to go to the hospital this is how you get your intravenous fluids supplied by the nearest clinic.

Dinner and breakfast at Kampong Speu

We stayed at this Pheng Ang Guesthouse the whole time we were in the Kampong Speu Province and commuted via Van to the villages nearby. A twin bedded room cost USD12 per nite. Comes with attached bathroom, aircon and tv. The aircon may not work at times, so best to check before you settle in.

This was the sign hung inside all the rooms. Note item 4 and 6, makes us wonder!!

We ate our breakfast and most of our dinners at a coffee shop opposite the guesthouse. Cambodia also serves beef noodles similar to the Vietnamese Pho Noodles.

They also have yau-char koay…tho not as crunchy and tasty as Malaysian ones!!

Comes with the pork porridge.

Samurai drink equivalent to our Red Bull.

For dinner, we normally ate the beef fried rice or noodles.

Cambodian Coffee

We have all heard of Vietnamese Coffee but what about Cambodian Coffee?? Well on our last nite in PP, we had a chance to try it out at a little coffee shop nearby. The shop was also a gathering hole for locals to see television so was kinda noisy.

This is the iced version…and you can see the condensed milk at the bottom. The trick is to try not to stir so much of it if you dont want it too sweet!

I had the hot version also very sweet but the coffee was really super-kao(thick) hence, thats why they put so much condensed milk.

Verdict : May not be as good as the Vietnamese version but runs a close second!!

Taiwanese Food in PP

We tried out this new Taiwanese coffee shop opposite our hotel in Phnom Penh, and it turned out to be quite good.

Apetizers served foc…salted baby prawns and mustard leaves.

I had this stewed oxtail noodles…

Ice Cream in a Coconut

This is a popular dessert that we ate twice in Phnom Penh. It is easily available in coffee shops around the Central market area.

This is what you get for USD2…ice cream in a coconut and a glass of coconut water.

There are other desserts available so check them out.

However the general opinion was the 3scoops of icecream over a bed of palm seeds and jelly is the best!!

Khmer Life Vocational Training Center, Phnom Penh

We visited this handicraft shop cum vocational training center run by Pastor Esther Ding from DUMC, PJ and this shop employs all local Cambodians from the woodworking to instore sales person. This is one of the missions to provide jobs for the locals.The shop is located just opposite Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum on one of the side roads.

You can order woodwork design on the site and you just pay and you can collect the piece 1/2days later.

Some of the woodwork designs – noticed a piece with “God Bless the Yong” obviously someone with the sirname ordered this piece but becos of an error…should be the Yongs….it had to be redone and this one just used as a sample.

Finally settled on this carving to bring back as souvenier. As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord-Joshua 24:15

They pack it for you in a lovely rattan pouch…….

See…voila!! Perfect as a gift or you can use the pouch as a pouch once you hang up the carving!!

Khmer Village Homestay where you can live amongst the locals.

We prayed that this center will flourish and prosper and provide a decent standard of living to the locals here.

Central Market, Phnom Penh

This is one of “The” places to go shopping for cheap stuff in PP. It is Central Market and here you can find cheap knockoffs, souveniers, pirated dvds/cds, foodstuff etc. Just be sure to put your bargaining skills to test and have plenty of small USD notes as foreigners are expected to pay in US$.

Baguettes in Phnom Penh

This is a very popular snack in Phnom Penh and is a leftover from the French colonial days. Every corner seems to have a stall or shop selling these. You wont miss it!

We patronised this coffee shop near Central market as some of us had tried it before.

Some of the workers preparing our order.

The ham and pickles are arranged on the plate.

The baguette which was spread with a kind of meat mayo sauce is lightly toasted.

Voila…the finished product…yummy and delicious.Costs USD1.50

Baguettes are displayed at the glass cabinet in front of the shop so you will know this shop serves them.

They also served juices and iced smoothies in this shop and we ordered the soursop smoothie which we havent tasted before.

Various fruit juice/smoothies can be prepared for you.

You can also order something like aiskachang with these toppings/condiments.

Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Arrived via Air Asia one bright sunny morning in November on a church missions trip. Phnom Penh is the capital and largest city of Cambodia and is located on the banks of the Mekong River. It has been the national capital since the French colonized Cambodia.

Once known as the Pearl of Asia, it was considered one of the loveliest of French-built cities in Indocina in the 1920s. Founded in 1434, the city is noted for its beautiful and historical architecture and attractions. Indeed as we toured briefly around the city, French architecture can be seen in many of the buildings.

Phnom Penh is home to more than 2 million of Cambodia's population of over 14 million. It is the wealthiest and most populous city in Cambodia and is home to the country's political hub.

This is the airport in Phnom Penh.

Our first impression of the city - the numerous motorbikes and bicycles were the main mode of transport. We started our short tour of PP with a stop at Choeung Ek or Killing Fields which is a memorial dedicated to those who were killed during the Khmer Rouge Communist Regime in the 70s.

Choeung Ek is the site of a former orchard and Chinese graveyard about 17 km south of PP and is the best-known of the sites known as The Killing Fields where the Khmer Rouge regime executed about 17,000 people between 1975 and 1979. Mass graves containing 8,895 bodies were discovered at Choeung Ek after the fall of the Khmer Rouge regime. Many of the dead were former inmates in the Tuol Sleng prison.

Today, Choeung Ek is a memorial, marked by a Buddhist stupa which has acrylic glass sides and is filled with more than 5,000 human skulls. Some of the lower levels are opened during the day so that the skulls can be seen directly. Many have been shattered or smashed in. The following pics tell the grim story in Choeung Ek.

Tourists are encouraged by the Cambodian government to visit Choeung Ek. Apart from the stupa, there are pits from which the bodies were exhumed. Human bones still litter the site.

There is also a museum here with exhibits of tools that were used by the Khmer Rouge regime to torture and kill their victims.

Victims were killed by being battered with iron bars, pickaxes, machetes and many other makeshift weapons owing to the scarcity, and subsequent price of ammunition.

Next stop was the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum. This was a former high school that was used as a concentration camp or Security Prison 21 (S-21) during the Khmer Rouge communist regime. It was here that Cambodians were tortured and held before transfer to Choeung Ek to be murdered.

From 1975 to 1979, an estimated 17,000 people were imprisoned at Tuol Sleng (some estimates suggest a number as high as 20,000, although the real number is unknown). At any one time, the prison held between 1,000–1,500 prisoners. They were repeatedly tortured and coerced into naming family members and close associates, who were in turn arrested, tortured and killed. In the early months of S-21's existence, most of the victims were from the previous Lon Nol regime and included soldiers, government officials, as well as academics, doctors, teachers, students, factory workers, monks, engineers, etc

One of the rooms where victims were bound and tortured to confess to whatever crimes they were charged with. Even after repeated washes, the blood stains on the walls and floors cannot be totally washed off.

For the first year of S-21’s existence, corpses were buried near the prison. However, by the end of 1979, cadres ran out of burial spaces, the prisoner and their family were taken to the Choeung Ek.

Prisoners were routinely beaten and tortured with electric shocks, searing hot metal instruments and hanging, as well as through the use of various other devices. Some prisoners were cut with knives or suffocated with plastic bags. Other methods for generating confessions included pulling out fingernails while pouring alcohol on the wounds, holding prisoners’ heads under water, and the use of the waterboarding technique.

Below is the Waterboard technique displayed at Tuol Sleng. Prisoners' legs were shackled to the bar at the top, their wrists were restrained to the brackets at the bottom and water was poured over their face using the blue watering can.

Instruments of murder

Out of an estimated 17,000 people imprisoned at Tuol Sleng, there were only twelve known survivors. Only four of them are thought to be still alive:

We were fortunate to meet one of them ie. Chum Mey(pic below). The others were Bou Meng, Vann Nath and Chim Math, the only woman among the survivors. All three of the men were kept alive because they had skills their captors judged to be useful. Vann Nath had trained as an artist and was put to work painting pictures of Pol Pot. Many of his paintings depicting events he witnessed in Tuol Sleng are on display in the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum today.

Bou Meng, whose wife was killed in the prison, is also an artist. Chum Mey was kept alive because of his skills in repairing machinery. Chim Math may have been spared because she was from Stoeung district in Kampong Thom where Comrade Duch a former leader of the Khmer Rouge Communist Regime was born. She intentionally distinguished herself by emphasising her provincial accent during her interrogations.

Visiting these 2 memorials was a terrifyingly sobering experience and its hard to imagine a time how there can be such gross disregard for human life. However genocides are still happening in certain parts of the world!

I got a better perspective of what the older generations of Cambodia went thru after visiting these 2 memorials. Indeed the scars are still existent in the older people as they are guarded and resistant to change.

The younger Cambodians will be the ones who bring change to this country. Everywhere we went, the younger people love to smile and they are friendly and eager to converse with you in English.

I spent the next 3days in a nearby province of Kampong Speu and came to love the people there. Hopefully i will be able to come back again for a longer trip and explore more of Cambodia!

Established in 1996, Moussandra serves authentic Greek, Spanish and Italian cuisine in a rustic and cozy ambiance. They are proud to be the Mediterranean and tapas restaurant in Kuala Lumpur. A proven favourite of both local sand visitors to Kuala Lumpur, Moussandra s situated in the heart of Kuala Lumpur but tucked away in a quiet spot of the prestigious shopping mall – Fahrenheit 88 formerly known as KL Plaza, a perfect hide away from the hustle bustle of Bukit Bintang.

They are known for our excellent food and warm service by a team of dedicated staff who love nothing better than to hear from our customers that they have had a lovely dining experience at Moussandra! Specialties include a wide range of Tapas, Paella Valenciana, Moussaka, Souvlaki, Braised Lamb Shank, Tiramisu and Crème Brulee. They have also chosen a range of wine to complement their traditional dishes. Specialty drinks include Sangria, Mojito and Caipiroscka.

Very cosy place but abit dark for my taste and spotted a couple of mosquitoes!! But the staff were very attentive and service was good!

The Set Menu consists of a few choices:-

1. Soup of either pumpkin or mushroom

2. Main of either Spaghetti Aglio E.Olio, Fettucini Carbonara, Paella Valenciana or Pizza Campestre

3. Dessert of either Creme Brulee or Affogato

2 of us had the pumpkin and one tried the mushroom.

Consistency of the soup was just average but good enough!

We selected 3 of the mains to share. The Paella was superb and portion was quite big- too much for one person definitely!

Pizza was thin crust and smelt and tasted heavenly!!

Fettucini Carbonara was very rich and creamy but felt the sauce was just abit too thick, otherwise was good!

We ordered half a jug of Sangria to share which costs RM45. Not really my kind of drink tho! Sangria here was a concoction of Red and white wine with chopped apples and pineapple and a fruit juice.

Their Affogato was excellent…espresso with vanilla ice cream.

Creme brulee served in a small ‘chilli sauce’ dish…yummy!!

At RM35 nett, this dinner was a steal!! Should have bought a few more vouchers. At RM70++, may not be that attractive tho. But the food is excellent and you can opt for ala carte to share as the portions are quite big.

Macaroons from The Cupcake Family, Melbourne

The word macaroon was derived from the Italian maccarone. It is applied to a variety of light, baked confections, described as either small cakes or meringue-like cookies depending on their consistency. The original macaroon was a "small sweet cake consisting largely of ground almonds or coconut.

So the original macaroons looked like cookies actually. However they have since evolved and now look like these colourful, sweet confectionary.

Well, since they are so sweet…my sweetsaddict just had to have them and so voila… a gift from Melbourne. Not so colourful as the ones above, but oh so sweeet and delicious nonetheless!! Diff flavors and still crispy after the long flight!

Due to the difficult process to make these macaroons, you can hardly see them being sold here in Malaysia. I have only seen them sold at Godiva in Pavillion. Fyi they were sold at RM7 per pc and these here from Melbourne were sold at around AUD3each.

Man Chou Lau, Meixian

This place is named 1000 Autumn Restaurant(direct translated) and used to be the residence of a wealthy Malaysian, It was subsequently sold and now operates as a restaurant specialising in Hakka cuisine.

Don’t you just love the olden days where there is a centre courtyard in every Chinese home? If this restaurant were to have someone playing the guzheng, erhu or some other Chinese Musical Instruments, then that would be bliss!! Unfortunately all they have are rooms to accomodate individual groups. But the surrounding is very nice with fish ponds and bonzai.

These are basic Hakka cuisine of which you will recognise the main ones.

My favorite of Mui Choy Kiu Yoke. Braised pork over pickled mustard leaves.

Pretty hostess to recommend the food is always welcome in my brother’s books.

These carps were in a small pond in the premises and look at how they are fighting to get the food. Reminds me of the rat race we live in…

Meixian to Taipu

From Meixian to Taipu, you have to arrange transport via a van or taxi for the 3hours journey. As they were travelling in a big group of around 10, a 20-seater mini bus/van was arranged that costs 500yuan per day. You will have to pay for the driver’s accomodation and food as well if you are hiring him for a few days.

On the way, you will come across many small 1-street villages and can stop for a cheap meal. You will be surprised with the delicious food you can get for around only 200yuan for 10pax.

Salt Baked chicken

Small mushrooms.

Claypot mushrooms(different type). Indeed mushrooms are aplenty in Taipu.

Some deep fried yam dish.

2 different pork dishes..one stirfried with vege(top pic) and another claypot with vege(bottom pic).

Preserved mustard leaves…braised.

More than enough food for everyone in air-conditioned comfort.

Taufoo or beancurd is a must eat!

Another type of preserved mustard leaves . As i mentioned earlier, preserved vege is a Hakka speciality so they do cook them in different ways. Pork is also a must have Taipu dish and the pork in China seems to be more succulent and delicious.

Infact after the trip, most of the group were abit ‘jilak’ with pork already. They were having 2-3pork dishes at every meal.

I suppose the next time, the trick is to just order 1 pork dish a meal to prevent from over-indulging! Less is more afterall.

Cooking Big Hakka Style in Taipu

You will never guess this old fashion fireplace can produce a feast right? Well thats exactly what my Aunty and her daughter in Taipu managed to do…with firewood no less! She uses this big wok to cook for big groups.

So the dishes keep coming and everyone’s waiting patiently for all the food to arrive!

Dishes are small but varied and served at 3 tables.

This my Uncle CH( aka Jayzee) in the cap. I think he is quite hungry already? But still have to wait awhile longer…

Finally all the food has arrived and stacked up no less for prosperity…lots of food for everyone! I think its a Chinese Tradition to serve as many dishes as there are the number of people at the table…hence….

My Aunty cooked the favorite Hakka dishes..this one you will recognise its the Sohn Pan Tzai (算盘子) or Àbacus Beads: Made of dough formed of tapioca and yam, cut into abacus-bead shapes, which when cooked, are soft on the outside and a chewy on the inside. This dish was cooked with dried shrimps, mushrooms and scallions.

I dont know whats the name of this dish but its a Hakka Dessert -sticky sweet rice dough with radish and ginger. Roast Duck was bought i think not cooked by my Aunty.

This is just boiled chicken and not Salt Baked chicken which the Hakkas are famous for. But there was salt baked chicken as well tho no pic of it . At the back is Deep Fried Taufoo.

Fried Glutinous rice with shallots and mushrooms.

This gulp…is my favorite…Stewed Pork(here we call it Yuen-Tai)..!! Yumms…

Soup of Pig’s Intestine with Pepper. Steam Fish(from the lake!) at the top right hand corner. In this part of China, fish from the sea would be very expensive so most of the fish you find here comes from either the rivers or the lakes.

This is Stir Fried Beef with Green Bell peppers.

Another classic Hakka dish of Pig’s Intestine fried with pickled Vegetables.

The dish piled on top is Stir Fried Beef with Vege.

So everyone sits down for a feast and you can also notice the walls are decorated with brightly coloured red paper with auspicious writings as it was nearing Moon Cake Festival(a week later) which is a Big Festival in China.

In Taipu or even China, this would be considered a big feast with so much meat as the average families may only have 1 meat dish at normal meals.

Pickled vegetables are very much used in most dishes as the Hakkas are famed for their frugal traits: any excessive supply was pickled for future needs. The most famous pickled vege is of course the pickled mustard leaves or mui choy and cooked with kiu-yoke(pork).

The Chinese believe that to be able to enjoy food is one of the major blessings in life so here’s to more food prosperity!!

This was my late lunch one day and tried out this new Chicken Set Lunch they intro recently. However regret to say the chicken was very salty but their salad was great as always. Should stick to the salad or sandwich next time. My fav Cafe Latte to bring me back to life in the late afternoon.

Huat Kee Fishball Noodles

This coffee shop is located just beside the flyover/roundabout of Jln Sg Besi with Jalan Loke Yew. If you are coming from South Jalan Sg. Besi, just keep left and turn left at roudabout. Its just 2shops away on the left. I have been hearing raving reviews on how its the best fish ball in KL for the past year but never managed to try it. This maybe due to the fact of their location which is quite hidden and also scarcity of parking area.

Perhaps due to the parking problem, the owners recently changed their operating times to 6pm-2am so now, with the office crowd off in the evenings, you have some parking space available.

Well the fishballs were truly bouncy and tasty tho quite small in size. 10fishballs later and still not really satisfied.

Noodles ladled with lots of pork lard.

They also do those small wanton things filled with pork paste. Didnt quite like this tho.

Not sure if this can be considered the best in KL but comes pretty close i suppose. Best of all you can eat this “breakfast meal” at nite when you dont want too heavy a meal!

A Dog’s Life

We went to have lunch one Sunday at Kuchai Lama near where a friend’s dogs were being groomed at this lovely pet shop. The owner himself has 7 beautiful dogs including Schnauzers and Poodles. His dogs are all so well groomed, well dressed and totally spoilt. They live in air-conditioned comfort to maintain their lovely fur/hair. Its a well-to-do dog’s life for sure!!

This shop has lovely pet accessories and all types of pet play items. You will be spoilt for choice. Located along Jalan Kuchai Maju 6 near the Pan Mee shop. You can go in and play around with his dogs. They, the dogs love it!

Beautiful Christchurch reduced to rubble?!

Christchurch is the entryway to NZ’s South Island and i still remember how beautiful and clean it was back in 2007 when i vacationed there. It was sad to learn of the 7.1-magnitude earthquake that occurred yesterday and rocked the city to its foundations.

Botanical Gardens Penang

We got to see this arch before it was torn down recently. Personally i thought it was an eye sore…its like jutting out amidst the greenery…! Another waste of public taxpayers’ money!! One look at this arch and we decided not to go in.

FYI Botanical Gardens is known to many in Penang as "Waterfall Gardens" because of the cascading waterfall nearby. It is a public park situated on Jalan Air Terjun.

To couples, it was the “in” place to park one’s car there at nite for romancing!!?lol. This was like 20-30 years back of course when it was still foc to just drive in.

My son is a huge breakdance fan as you can see even when we were sightseeing at Khoo Kongsi in Penang recently, he couldn’t resist doing a breakdance move for the camera! Our last morning saw us in Gurney Drive again and this is the only place serving breakfast/brunch besides the bakuteh next door and the mamak further down the Drive.

Every trip back Penang involves at least one dinner outing to Gurney Drive for the nightime hawker fare.

Penang Rojak with the delicious prawn sauce(he-ko).

My boy …having craving for rice so ordered this claypot rice for him.

Sotong Bakar or Grilled Calamari. Fantastic with the sweet spicy peanut sauce.

Fried Oysters(Or-chian)- this stall has the longest queue and you wont miss it. But i dont think its the best.

Little Penang Heritage Tour

A lot of hype has been talked about in the press on Penang being a Unesco World Heritage Site albeit politically. And being a proud Penangnite, I played tourist on a very hot day walking around Georgetown. Visited some kongsi/associations, mosque, indian temple and just admiring Penang again after a long time. More can be done to restore and beautify Penang as you can see from some of these pics of the colonial shophouses. You dont find this in modern buildings already. I just love the intricate designs on the building’s facade !

Breakdance at Khoo Kongsi

Last month when we were back in Penang with my boy who was back for hols…and here he is doing a breakdance in front of Khoo Kongsi!!

Khoo Kongsi is being restored and the row of shophouses in front and at the side were vacated and being renovated. Probably this time next year, they would already be up and running selling Penang food and souveniers. The RM5 entrance fees were kinda worth it to go in and take some great pics!

Kheng Pin Cafe

If you want good lobak in Penang, then you must go to Penang Road and look for Kheng Pin Cafe. Its located at the traffic light junction of Hutton Lane with Penang Road. They open pretty early in the morning so you can try and park along the public parking along Hutton Lane.

Run by husband wife team and they deep fry the lobak non stop.

You can order a standard mix plate to try it out and then top up with whatever you like if not enough. Costs around RM7 if not mistaken.

Prawn mee also good.

Fish ball noodles which i find Penang’s ones are so delicious. Cant find in KL.

There is also a porridge stall here and this Mixed porridge(contains fish, pork, century egg) was absolutely fantastic.

Penang’s wantan mee which is equivalent to KL’s tho here the noodles were slightly thicker.

Will definitely patronize this shop again for breakfast when in Penang next.

Yes i went back Penang for 3days just to binge on all my favorite food and this is one of them!! The ais kachang nothing much to shout about but its the durian ice cream and jelly that is the clincher!! Brings me back everytime! Kek Seng is located along Penang Road in the row of shops opposite Komtar.

Fried beehoon topped with deep fried 3-layer pork. Was quite good. The yee-meen with fishcake was just average.

Total bill for 3plates of noodles, 1 fish, 1 vege and Chinese tea came up to RM89.00. Free fruits of freshly cut small papayas were given.

Yik Kee Restaurant, Karak, Pahang

On our way back from Kuantan, we stopped by this restaurant in Karak for their famed durian puffs/bombs! Yes its the same one as those you may have eaten in, in PJ’s Section 52, TTDI or Gohtong Jaya. This is the original shop tho.

They serve all types of food including noodles and meat dishes besides the pastries.

We ordered a bit of everything including the durian tarts and puffs as well as their char siew puffs and egg tarts.

The durian filling is not very sweet but taste pretty good when just fresh from the oven. Other than that, i would say the other pastries were sub-standard.

This is the durian icecream pancake. Didnt like it.

Another group from our church stopped here too for a meal – they had Cantonese fried noodles and the Hokkien bachang. Nothing fantastic according to them! I suppose if you do pass by Karak town, you can drop by for a snack but otherwise, i wouldnt come all the way here just to try their pastries again.

Sri Gambut/Joji Gambut Currypuffs

After our disappointing cendol, we went to Restoran Sri Gambut to try out their ‘curry puffs’! This restoran is located near the TNB in the centre of town. Their curry puffs were voted one of the best in Malaysia in The Star’s pick of best curry puff poll.

Small little cafe serving Hainanese Colonial fare. See the pic of the owner with the Regent of Pahang. However, please dont attempt to speak to him in Hainanese as he replies in English!!

The Hainanese were famous for their cooking during the Colonial days and i suspect the owner here is also one of the descendants from these cooks/chefs. The chicken pie(RM12.50) here is supposedly equivalent if not better than Dome’s without Dome’s price tag! Hainanese noodles is also a must-try if you happen to be in Kuantan for lunch/dinner.

Our freshly fried curry puffs came after a 15minute wait.

Slightly bigger than the average one and the crust pastry was super crispy and the filling was delicious. All of us packed extra to take back. Costs RM1.80 each!

I was in Kuantan last weekend for church camp and this year it was held in Bukit Gantang Resort, Kuantan. Its about a 3hours drive from KL but for us it took around 4hours as we stopped for lunch at Bukit Tinggi. Otherwise it was quite a smooth drive via the Gambang interchange which is the East coast expressway exit point to Kuantan.

BGRC covers over 500acres and will be the first and largest water park city in the East Coast. It is being developed by Sentoria Group and they are trying to develop this place along a nature-based theme.

This would not be difficult given its location in lush forest greenery and gentle undulating terrain.

I arrived late Sunday afternoon and the pool was packed with weekend frolickers not surprising given it was also during the school holidays .

View from my balcony inwards. Furniture is all wood based and i stayed in the 2room apartment which has an attached kitchenette with kettle. No cooking facility tho. However since all our meals were included in the 3d/2n package, this was not a problem.

Furthermore, the buffet style breakfast/lunch/dinner spread was quite ample and varied. Nothing too fancy but you do get cereals and milk with Malaysian fare of nasi lemak etc for breakfast and lunch dinner would include salads,pasta of spaghetti etc. So you dont really need to bring any snacks unless you are a supper person in which case those “noodle-in-cup” snacks would be good.

There was a East Coast Discovery exhibition being held while we were there, but i didnt check it out till the last day. lol. Basically it was exhibiting local handicrafts etc.

There is also a small amusement park located near to the shop area for the kiddies. As we had only 3d/2n, and having morning and evening church sermons, we didnt check out the waterpark facilities located around 1km away nor the other parks such as the forest park or adventure park. It didnt help that the only afternoon we had off, was a terribly hot one so only the kids and teens went. Heard they had a blast..it was like a mini Sunway Lagoon.

This place is really ideal for corporate getaways or seminars etc as you have everything within the resort. Dont expect 5* resort facilities tho and preferably dont go during school holidays or weekends. Quite a number of our church group didnt get to check in till late evening as the cleaning crew couldn’t clean fast enough given the big groups checking in/out! It would have been ideal if we had a 4d/3n camp but well if you like to check it out, click on their website here.

Cendol Air Putih, Kuantan

On a recent trip to Kuantan, and based on a Makan-Makan book on good eats in Malaysia, we patronised this cendol stall to try out their special cendol pulut!!

It’s a small little stall that sits probably 20pax max and you have a choice of cendol biasa, cendol kachang, cendol pulut and ais kachang.

This is the Cendol Kachang which is the cendol with red beans.

Cendol Pulut is cendol with sweetened glutinous rice added.

Overall verdict:

Dont believe everything books tell you. The cendol was not as good as Malacca’s nor Penang’s best and maybe not even as good as some in the Klang Valley.

The gula melaka was inferior and the santan not thick enough. Give it a miss next time you are in Kuantan.

For those of you who work in KL, would emphatise with me on the horrendous traffic jams all over the city yesterday afternoon!! And most of you would have known it was due to this! Lucky me found out about this few days earlier and stayed clear of the city but then even the outskirts up to cheras was not spared!

If you read the news, you would know this is a “gathering” to demo against Isreal organised by Umno Youth lead by its leader no less. My question is, “where is the anti-riot squad?” Enough said…1Malaysia.

Uncle’s 74th Birthday Dinner

Uncle Chu Hwa’s children gave him a grand 74th Birthday dinner at Overseas Restaurant in PJ on 15th May recently.

This particular branch of Overseas Restaurant is located at the former Asia Jaya Shopping Complex beside the Federal Highway in PJ. And i noticed they seem to specialise in ‘grand birthdays’ from the menus posted on their wall.

One of his grand-daughters from Singapore was the MC that nite. Only 12 years old and speaks like a pro.

Then it was his son’s Wee Loon’s turn to charm!! And he managed to do that perfectly with his unique accents! English, Thai, German…nothing fazes this father’s son!

My Bucket List

The movie “The Bucket List” which i have posted about and its featured sometimes on HBO made me think about my own Bucket List. I realised that uppermost of my list would be to visit Italy.

My trip should ideally cover Rome/Milan/Venice/Florence/Pompeii . I want to see the lost city of Pompeii and enjoy a hot air balloon ride in Tuscany. I am sure lots of pasta, Chianti, pizza and cheese will be consumed on this trip. Not forgetting the Italian coffee and ice cream!!Just thinking about it keeps me working and saving for that day!! Shortest period to cover all would be 2 weeks!! Anyone knows any budget tours that will cover all those places?

In the meantime, i think i will have to content with googling about these places.

Have you tried the McD’s brekkies? This is the pancakes that we wanted to try for so long and finally one day before 11am, we managed to get one! Syd paid for it and remarked so cheap…RM4.20 which is 2 pc of pancake and a cup of tea/coffee(refillable).

So we kinda kedekut this day and shared one. Butter and syrup was more than enough compared to A&W’s where they just give a small little tub and have to pay extra if you want additional. But A&W’s waffles are the bomb!

McD’s pancakes okok only! Others would prefer the other breakkie sets and i would try them another day! I’m loving it!

Mother’s Day Treat

Another Mother’s Day just passed and just spent it with my darling girl Sydney. She treated me to Monte’s at Bangsar Shopping Complex. All the pics are taken by her which explains the better quality!

Anyway Monte’s was packed that day with many patrons celebrating the day with their mothers. So we managed to get just a 2-seater near the windows which was kinda bright! Service was also slow and the food came abit cold. However to give them credit, the service was always with a smile and the food still delicious.

Buns were not warm at all which made Syd remark that they were like the airline buns!

Baked scallops in a minty olive oil sauce that was absolutely delicious.

To keep things healthy we ordered the Smoked Salmon Salad.

Before we dived into one of my fav ie. Peppermint Lamb.

Well anyone who is a parent knows our kids grow up and things are never the same…..no more cute little cards they hand-make for you and sweet butterfly kisses.

But v parents learn to adapt and accept them as ‘almost-adults’ cos there is no other choice, right?!

We pray and hope they dont make the same mistakes as us and thank God for moments like these when they show us…deep down they are still the same adorable little babies we give birth to and cherish…

Din Tai Fung Restaurant

Heard much about this restaurant and finally had a chance to try it in Pavillion Level 6. This is the Chinese version of fast food so dont worry that you have to wait too long for your food.

The kitchen is located at the front of the restaurant and deco is simple and yet comfortable. The only grouse was that the air-conditioning wasnt too good and it got pretty hot whilst eating.

The menu with pics and easy to order.

Xiao long bao is a must try and so we ordered the mixed combo of crab meat and pork for a promo price of RM20.80.

The soup was plentiful but taste wise , i think Dragon-I’s much better. And i would leave out the crab meat one if i were to come again.

The Hot and Sour Soup was pretty good tho at RM7.50.

This is their House Special Tofu RM15.80 served on a bed of spinach. Can try!

We didnt order dessert cos we were sweating already and went for dessert elsewhere. Quite surprising cos Pavillion’s air conditioning is pretty cold so its probably becos of the location of the kitchen in front which is affecting the air inside!

Would try a diff seating area the next time. Avoid the left hand side eventho it looks cosier and more private!

This is fast becoming everyone’s favorite hawker stall food court! And its completely NON-HALAL! So be forewarned.

Incase you dont believe me, look at this roasted pork knuckle we had last Saturday!! Shared this with my bro and we almost couldnt finish it. And Patrick is a monstrous meat eater!! He also had a beer to top this off while i opted for a more fat-clarifying pot of green tea from the dimsum stall.

Comes with ketchup, mustard sauce and brown sauce for dipping. Costs around RM35 if not mistaken. The skin was not really that crispy tho but the meat was tender and delicious. For that price, once cant be too demanding i suppose.

Lot 10 Hutong is touted as Malaysia’s “Best of the Best” Street Comfort Food. It offers 26 of the country’s best eateries that have survived the 3rd and 4th generations.

Some of the notable ones include Petaling Street’s Kim Lian Kee Fried Hokkien Mee, Ho Weng Kee’s Wanton Mee, Imbi Road’s Pork Noodle, Hon Kee’s Cantonese-style Porridge, Soong Kee’s Hakka Style Beef Noodle, Campbell’s Teochew style Mini Popiah(Spring roll), Ma Sang Kor’s Bak Kut Teh besides Ipoh’s Chicken Rice and Penang Style Delicacies.

We had our 2nd Yong Family Annual Dinner one rainy Saturday night at this tai-chow place in Sunway which has an aircon room that can seat 4tables. We occupied 3 tables eventhough a few Yongs couldnt make it.

This place and the dishes for the night were all recommended by my cousin James Yong aka 007 ! Yes he is a regular here and just mention 007, you may get better and faster service!

As it was raining, dinner was delayed for more than an hour, so you can imagine when the 1st dish came, I wasnt fast enough to take a pic b4 someone digged in!! rofl

This is the signature Loh Mee with crab meat. Put in some vinegar and definitely a great hot dish for a cold rainy night.

Next was the deep fried chicken wings. Definitely one of the best chicken wings i have tasted. Skin was slightly crispy and dunno what was the batter they used but it tasted delicious.

My brother’s and most Hakkas’ favorite dish of stewed pork leg(Yuen Tai). Stewed to perfection …meat was soft and it may be super fatterning but wth…you have to eat the lean meat with the fatty skin to appreciate it!

Deep fried taufoo with mayonaise sauce for dip.

Lettuce(yau mak) fried with garlic

007 loves the following dish of Claypot Curry Vegetables. However i found it abit too ‘lemak-ish’. Too much coconut milk.

This is Sweet Pork Ribs. To die for dish for both kids and adults alike.

Last but not least is the 4vege dish consisting of petai, brinjals, long beans and one more vege(cant remember the name but Malay dishes normally have it fried with belachan). Anyway it was a super combo.

Total bill each table came up to around RM200 with water and foc a plate of fruits. Wine was BYO. Altogether great place and great food at greater prices for our reunion. Convenient car park with privacy in the room and no steps/staircase which is a must when you have seniors dining with you.

So a great big “thank you” to James aka 007 for organising and here’s to many more!

Old Hong Kong Kitchen – Part 2

Yeah i went back to try the Fried Crab Beehoon so this will be Part 2 of review on Old Hong Kong Kitchen in Imbi.

They had some fresh seafood from Kuala Selangor and recommended to try out this 4-teeth fish!! Yes it has 4-teeth! Other than that i dont know what its called. Maybe Senangin or something like that. Deep fried till crispy.

Ok…this is what i came here for…piece de resistance!! Crab is coated with a bit of flour before being deep fried(so that it doesnt have a soggy texture but hard crust). Thereafter it is fried with the beehoon and some green bell-peppers!

All i can say is…its super yummy! There was some leftover beehoon and i tabau-ed it and had it for supper!! However for this portion of one slightly bigger fleshy crab, this dish costs RM88!!! So better clean up the leftovers, right?! Gosh i am still thinking and craving for this dish. They must have added ganja…??LOL

Ying Ker Lou is turning to be one of my fav restaurants and thats becos they serve pretty authentic Hakka cuisine. So this is another day when i sampled out some new dishes.

This is fried pig’s stomach with pineapple. Lovely with a tinge of sour mixed with sweetness of the pineapple. The stomach was tender and cut into strips without any ‘piggy’ smell!

This fried Hakka noodles with mushrooms, leek and pork.

Fried Lui Cha(or Lei Cha) Rice. Yes this is different from the one which has a pot of green tea to go with. The rice here is fried with green tea and egg and served on a plate with the chopped long beans, preserved radish, sesame seeds, peanuts, mustard greens, cabbage, cubes of tau kwa etc.

(Lei cha (擂茶; léi chá; literally "pounded tea") is a Hakka tea-based beverage or gruel consisting of a mix of tea leaves that are ground or pounded together with various roasted nuts, seeds, and grains.)

Another Hakka fav is the Pig Stomach Pepper Soup.

One kind of savoury dumpling. Forgot which one it is cos YKL has so many types.

Initially i thought this blackish dumpling would be similar to the others but turned out to be kinda sweet and reminded me of the malay kueh kochi! You can actually order this as a dessert!

Will try out the other Hakka dishes soon!

Restoran Ole Sayang is one of the famous Nyonya/Peranakan food restaurants in Malacca. It is located at Melaka Raya.

This is a halal restaurant so only chicken pong-teh is served here.

Deep fried fish with to-die-for sambal belachan.

Pickled mustard green duck soup otherwise known as Itik Tim.

Fried potato leaves.

Overall review - Nothing spectacular and they seem to cater more to tour groups on that particular Saturday. Some of our KL nyonya restaurants are much better.

Rama V Thai Restaurant

Rama V is located at 5 Jalan U Thant near to the US Embassy and Royal Selangor Golf Club. It is set in a bungalow amidst lush greenery. At the back is a pool and chalet like huts/rooms are available for private dining.

Wish i had a house like this is all i can say! Looks very resort like.

This is the main dining hall and the furnishings are definitely more upscale fine dining.

If you do not know what to order, do ask the waitress who is only too happy to recommend and though the dishes are slightly pricier than average, nevertheless the larger portions make up for it!

This is the mango salad topped with cashew nuts. Their salad was different from others in that, chopped peanuts were mixed into the paste. So it kinda tasted like our Malaysian rojak .

Thai Pineapple Fried Rice with pineapple, raisins, peas, shrimps and egg served on a plate and not on an empty pineapple but totally Delicious!

One of my fav Thai dishes is fish cake and Rama V excels in this dish.

I loved Thai kueh since childhood days where we use to eat it in Hatyai but since then, i can only indulge in this when I am in Thailand. So am truly delighted when i saw that Rama V has this in their menu.

Most Malaysian Thai restaurants serve the Tako Haew (water chestnut and corn with coconut topping) or the Thai agar-agar jelly or Tab Thim Krob/Red Ruby( cubed water chestnut in coconut milk) as their desserts.

Rama V has a couple of additional kueh and that is the yellowish egg thing in the center right which is called Foi Thong which is like sweet shredded egg yolk and Steamed Tapioca which is to the far right.

Anyways pinched the following 2 clearer pics from a thai website and these were my favorites. See the egg yolk ones which consisted of the Foi Thong, Thong Yip (sweet egg yolk cup)
and Thong Yot (sweet egg yolk drop).

The picture to the right is of the Luk Choop which is mashed Mung beans moulded into miniature fruit shapes.

Anyways the waitress suggested coming again at nite as there would be a wider selection of desserts especially weekends. There is a wide range of main dishes which are also popular and hopefully will be trying them out soon!

Old Hong Kong Kitchen

I first went to this restaurant located on Jalan Utara, Off Jalan Imbi sometime during the CNY for dim sum and it left me with a bad after taste. So bad that i refused to blog about it!

Well recently heard some rave reviews about their dishes so went to give it another try!

This is their homemade taufoo with seaweed covering on top and topped with minced pork and mushrooms. The taufoo was actually quite good..slightly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Topping went well with it thought it was abit too salty! RM15.

Okay this is the ‘piece de la resistance’(pronounce it like the French pls!) that I came here for…stewed sharksfin rice. The transparent thing you see on top is the sharksfin and stewed with mushrooms, crab meat and abit of chicken too.

You mix it up and this is what you get, the rice which is underneath. Basically becomes like a porridge after mixing. This claypot dish costs RM32(1pax portion).

To be honest I would still prefer my sharksfin ‘neat’…without the rice. Once you mix it up, I couldnt taste/feel the texture of the sharksfin and whats the point of paying that money if you cant taste the sharksfin right? But this is individual taste i guess cos my friends liked it!

Seems to be the trend nowadays in restaurants to offer vegetables served 2styles on a plate. This one which is kai-lan had one portion steamed and the other deep fried with anchovies. RM15.

Old Hong Kong has aquariums with live fish outside for you to chose and they cook it for you and most days they may also have seafood that is supposedly from the previous day’s catch in Kuala Selangor. Anyway tried out their ikan kembong which was served with belachan. RM8 for 2pc. Basically taste like home cooked fish. Nothing special and didnt quite like the belachan.

Overall , I would probably come back again to try out the fried crab with beehoon as its supposed to be another signature dish.Roast suckling piglet is also available on reservation.

For those who would like to try their Dim sum despite my bad review, there is 50% discount every Wednesday and Sundays but dont expect anything fancy and please dont order the siao-loong pau no matter how much the captain insists and recommends!

One good thing about this place is ample parking around and in front of it. Across an open parking space is Imbi Pasar/market.

Apologise for this forgotten post from CNY. My brother Patrick suggested trying this place out after passing it many times while driving on 313-315 Jalan Pudu. They have air-con and non air-con lots but the weather being what it is, we opted for the air-con!

Many of their signature dishes were also not available during the CNY period like Ngap Thun Chi, Kung-Po Top Shell and Rolled Chicken, Stuffed Pig’s Intestine with Dried Scallops and Rolled Fish Maw, Braised Stuffed Duck, Eight Treasure Duck, braised stuffed duck ,chicken skin stuffed with fish paste etc. Be prepared for some pretty steep prices for these pre-order dishes tho.

The bill came up to around RM200 for this meal for 7pax.

Grandmama’s Pavillion KL

Due to some miscommunication on venue, we ended up at Grandmama’s on 27th March 2010 Earth Hour to celebrate my elder bro Steven’s and my Sydney’s birthdays which fell on 28th and 31st respectively.

The food is similar in variety to Madam Kwan’s but i would say taste wise fell short. So these were the dishes we ordered for our gang of 8 (increased by one) with the inclusion of my niece’s boyfriend Wayhan.

We had satay, acar, sambal petai ladyfingers, asam gulai siakap, curry chicken, claypot taufoo, fried mixed vege, and an omelette(not pictured).

Dessert was this cake from Lavender’s downstairs and its a very light mango cheese cake. Was a good recommendation from Lavender’s staff as it is supposed to be one of their more popular cakes and suitable for after-dinner. You would think its very rich and cheesy but wasn’t so.

This little French Italian restaurant has been around awhile but i didnt get to try it till recently for Sydney’s 18th birthday and she requested it to be celebrated here. So birthday girl gets her wish!

Located at busy busy Jalan Loke Yew/Maharajalela, you would not be wrong to expect at best a bistro or cafe here. But the moment you step inside, you will be blown away by the opulent decadent decor!! I was instantly transported back to the time I dined at a similar restaurant in Paris, France!! Definitely understood why its known as the place to propose to your special significant other!!

Je t'aime..Veux-tu m'épouser ? (I love you..will you marry me?)

The only thing that was a let down was probably when we requested to be seated in the non-smoking section and this being a cosy little place, we ended up in front of the entrance to the toilet! And the smell was NOT nice! So we relocated to a table slightly further away from the smell of bleach and chemical. Cafe Cafe should really do something to improve on this!

Mismatched chairs and furniture, checkered flooring, dangling cystals, long floor length drapes…perfect for a proposal!??!

Mirrors reflect the lighting and serves to also make the interior look bigger than it really is!

Yeap this is the stinky toilet that is furnished oh so nice but smelt oh so terrible!

Starters of baked escargot served with slices of baguette.(RM26) Delicious!

Was recommended a bottle of Chilean Sauvignon Blanc(RM99) to go with the meal. Cockage is RM60 so not advisable to BYO.

My favorite - Fois gras(goose liver) served with Scallops.(RM86) This is one of their signature dishes.My mouth still waters thinking of this!!High cholesterol but wth! You only live once…lol.

Truffles King Prawns was the waiter’s recommendation and though it was nice, i didnt quite taste the truffles and the prawns were nice but abit on the small side! (RM45)

Succulent French Duck Breast.(RM72)

Fettucine with Truffles Sauce(RM58)…very tasty and definitely meant to be shared as its just soooooo creamy and rich!!

Tiramisu (RM23)…came chilled which I didnt quite appreciate…still prefer Ciao’s tiramisu.

The birthday girl with her Hot Chocolate Cake(RM28) served with vanilla ice cream. Be careful you dont burn your tongue on the molten lava chocolate filling!

A totally satiated girl albeit slightly tipsy after 3 glasses of white wine!! Yeap she’s finally Legally High!

Definitely would go again…its just such a dreamy place and service was impeccable. Pricey but cheaper than flying to Paris, oui? S'il vous plait..(pardon my french…this place just does that to you!)

This is a NEW Sony Cybershot camera that i won(not actually…had to spend like RM5k in a month to get it!!) in the recent Std Chartered credit card promo.Was hoping to win a new Sony Bravia LCD TV but got only the Camera !! No luck!!

Black colour, 12.1 mp, 3x optical zoom, 3" LCD screen and i have bought a memory card 8GB at RM97.00 to go with it as the prize doesnt come with one!!? You will see others selling this camera for around RM450 but without a memory card! Warranty is for 1year and i just took possession of it on 24th March 2010. Westin Hotel’s EEST Restaurant

EEST is actually the Fushion Restaurant located inside Westin Hotel along Jalan Bukit Bintang, KL.

Interior is very cosy and tables are just the right distance apart to offer some privacy to the diners. The kitchen is located at one corner of the restaurant. There is also a sushi/sashimi bar located at the other side offering Japanese food.

On this particular day, it was still Chinese New Year…yes its been almost a month but i have been having a blogger’s block and so a month later…never too late i suppose! Had the CNY set lunch.

Mini yee sang with avocados and salmon….nice combo!! Cos i love salmon and avocados i guess!

Roasted chicken…skin was crispy..nice.

Deep fried prawns ala “kon cheen har look” style.

Brocolli with sea cucumber…sea cucumber tasted ‘fishy’!

Fried rice was prrrreety good. The rice was cooked al dente which is a key to good fried rice!

Dessert of deep fried ice-cream with condensed milk.

All in all, was a nice and satisfying lunch and atmosphere was great. Probably worth coming again for some other food.

Ying Ker Lou at Pavillion

Tried out this restaurant before in Sunway Pyramid and yay… now they are finally closer to home at Pavillion KL. Lots of Hakka cuisine to try out!! I have been there twice already to try out diff dishes.

Ying Ker Lou offers various Hakka cuisine from the Taipu, Hoh Poh, Fei Chew clans etc.

Two large abacus displays on the wall!!

Various kinds of Tea are offered and served in earthenware or brass tea pots. The teapots were different at every table and looked really cute. However i got this very plain teapot at mine this day.

Hakka dumpling with vegetarian filling…yummy!!

This Hakka noodle tastes like the one i had in Taipu China!! Super yummy fish sauce….

Rice wine chicken noodles with mook-yee…another Hakka favorite but in this instance, the wine/soup was abit too sweet. Think they added sugar…lots of it!?

Dessert of deep fried yam and sweet potato with ninko. Ninko too little…!

Sesame ball with lin-yung filling…can give it a miss!

Their menu has a page dedicated to famous local Hakkas….which didnt include my grandfather?!wth!!

Gary Chou, Michael Wong and Eric Moo all quite well known singer/songwriters are also Hakka.

Broccoli

Furthermore, studies have linked the isoflavones found in soybeans with improved bone density in postmenopausal women who previously had low bone mass; researchers believe these compounds may play a significant role in preventing bone fractures. Soy isoflavones have also been credited with easing menopausal hot flashes.

Wild Salmon

Wild salmon is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D, and iron, and it's a high-quality source of protein. A word of caution: Independent studies comparing the nutritional content of wild and farmed salmon showed the farmed variety had drastically reduced levels of protein and healthy omega-3 fats. Farmed salmon were also found to have significant levels of carcinogenic substances and other toxins, as well as higher levels of inflammatory omega-6 fats. If you're eating for health, opt for the wild variety.

Salmon is one of the few food sources naturally rich in vitamin D, which is needed to absorb calcium, maintain proper levels of calcium in the blood, and promote normal bone growth. Little Big Soldier – Movie Review

CNY is the time when i just have to go to the cinema even if there are plenty of DVDs to watch. Its a tradition left from my dad’s days with us when every CNY, whole family would go to town and watch a Chinese movie. This year was no exception eventho i didnt go back to Penang this time.

KL was pretty much deserted during CNY but not at the cinemas. We went to Pavillion and only managed to get tix for Little Big Soldier. We wanted to watch Valentine’s Day or 72 Tenants of Prosperity or All’s Well.. but looks like everyone was trying to escape the heat and get into the aircon movie theatres.

Anyway, Syd was happy cos it features her fav singer Wang Lee Hom!! Unexpected good luck for her..lol. I personally didnt like Wang Lee Hom when he acted in Lust Caution but then with Jackie Chan onboard and no other movie tix available after queing half hour…..beggars cant be chosers i suppose.

When the movie started, all of a sudden we realised…oh no…movie is in Mandarin!! Thank God for precise English subtitles!!

Here is the synopsis for the movie.

Jackie Chan is an old soldier who only wants to survive. The other is a young general(Wang Lee Hom) who is aspiring to conquer. After a bloody battle, the two are the only ones alive. When the soldier finds the injured general, he decides to kidnap him and brings him on a long journey to collect a reward, thinking by doing so he will no longer need to fight a war.

The general, feeling insulted, attempts suicide but is saved by the soldier every time. Somewhere along the way, the soldier and the general find themselves becoming allies in a fight against the real villains.

Movie Review – 8/10 Unexpectedly was a great entertaining movie. Lee Hom is still a stick in the mud but Jackie Chan makes up for it with his slapstick humour and stunts.

I saw the BTS(behind the scenes) on E Channel Astro and thought it should be fun to watch these 3 great actors in a movie. Alec Baldwin from 3rd Rock, Meryl Streep…who can forget her in Mama Mia and Steve Martin…long time funny comedian!

Was quite entertaining at parts but thought the storyline was abit weak and quite predictable. Anyway this is the official synopsis of the movie.

Jane is the mother of three grown kids, owns a thriving Santa Barbara bakery/restaurant and has - after a decade of divorce - an amicable relationship with her ex-husband, attorney Jake. But when Jane and Jake find themselves out of town for their son's college graduation, things start to get complicated. An innocent meal together turns into the unimaginable - an affair.

With Jake remarried to the much younger Agness, Jane is now, of all things, the other woman. Caught in the middle of their renewed romance is Adam, an architect hired to remodel Jane's kitchen. Healing from a divorce of his own, Adam starts to fall for Jane, but soon realizes he's become part of a love triangle. Should Jane and Jake move on with their lives, or is love truly lovelier the second time around? It's--complicated.

Went for a light dinner at Michealangelo’s just to actually try out their tiramisu. If you dont like nude paintings, dont look at the walls. You should also not bring little kids here less they shout about the shameless wall decor!

Neroteca (Italian Restaurant)

This cosy little restaurant is located at the Ground floor of the Somerset Building at Lorong Ceylon. It seems to be little well known except by word of mouth as you can never see it from main roads or even if you walk by. The interior sits probably 30-40 people max so if you are thinking of going during the weekends, try and book 1st.

I went there for lunch and as you can see, the front of the restaurant is just glass and it can get pretty glaring from the hot afternoon sun. Another thing that i didnt like was that smoking is allowed here and this kinda ruins the taste for me! However the waitress was kind enough to relocate us to another table mid-way thru our meal as the next table was puffing like a chimney!

See those things hanging from railing are sausages and other dried foodstuff –chillies and garlic etc. Ahem, looked abit disgusting tho…lol!

Complimentary fresh bread to dip in olive oil/balsamic vinegar and roasted garlic…heavenly!

Ordered parma ham on oh so sweet honey melon!! How come i cant get melons as sweet as these??!

Their Neroteca salad with croutons, bacon, olives topped with generous shavings of parmesan cheese. Was abit too salty for me but would be great for cheese lovers as there were chunks of cheese in it as well.

Medium sized lobster on a bed of squid ink pasta in tomato based sauce!!

The pasta looks weird right? This sphagetti has been enhanced with the chemical substance extracted from the ocean squid so it becomes very black in color. Squid ink, which is also available from the Cuddlefish (related to the Squid family), is added to the water and dough as pasta is made, creating very black colored pasta. This ink provides a salty and somewhat sweet flavor as an ingredient and coloring to the pasta.

1st time i tasted this and other than not looking “nice” its actually quite tasty.

Last was dessert but we were disappointed as they didnt have tiramisu that day so we settled for a chocolate mousse cake and a cheese cake.

The cakes were a huge disappointment and better ones can be had in Starbucks/Coffee Bean!

Total for the meal for 3pax came up to a whopping RM338.55(incl 10%+5%). Main course of the pasta lobster costs RM178, Salad was RM32 and Melon ham RM34. Cake is RM22 each but they gave us one complimentary to make up for the “out of stock” tiramisu.

A friend mentioned the pasta carbonara is to die for and may try this out another day!

Parking inside the building is only for tenants so you have to park opposite in the open air car park or along the side of the road(nightime is ok but daytime you may get a traffic summons)!
